If you happen to be in Berlin, attending concerts at the Konzerthaus or Philharmonie, it is worth knowing where to find the authentic Italian ristorante versus the sordid crowd of Italian style restaurants.
Il Bocca di Bocco
retains its crown for quality authentic, but the service and spirit seems to have been abused too often by touristic crowds. I went again, this time for lunch, which was much better. Our Veronese waiter was charming, the cuisine enlightening. Taglioni tartfuffo, burrata pugliese with prosciutto di San Daniele, a perfect Penne arrabiata, but the triumph was a spada with a sun-dried tomato crust on artichockes. Add a bottle of Amarone to the mix and lunch was worth the second attempt. But it is exensive, like Borgia, the ultimate in Berlin Italian Gastronomy, more Hotel Armani style, then Enoteca Pinchiorri. Malatesta
, just behind the Konzerthaus, has a lively, Milanese quality. The food, from Pizza's to Pasta to even Carciofi all Romana, is good and authentic, though sometimes the freshness might be called into question. One can taste a sauce thats been cooking all day, and vegetable a few days old. But its convenient and tasty for an after rehearsal pizza napolitano with Bufalo Mozzarella. Il forno
, just around the corner from the elegant Regent Hotel has pizza slices, but real thin crust and crispy. Imagine 4 or 5 pizzas to choose from, each with their own special appeal. And its quicker. Sometimes fast Italian food can still be authentic and get you ready for the concert in no time! Presto!
